San Francisco’s BARRY McGEE returned to the BALTIC CENTER in Gateshead, England, for this week’s opening of his first solo show at the progressive UK institution, “They Don’t Make This Anymore.” Featuring new site-specific constructions and some reconfigurations of pieces from his recent large-scale installations, Barry has created a new, massive aesthetic environment on the building’s second floor that includes paintings, animatronic sculpture, an upended truck, drawings (both his and his father’s), bottles, and a collection of sketchbooks. We get the feeling this show represents one of the last looks at this particular thematic chapter of Barry’s career before he brings in a new mode of thought in the coming years.
