Modern masters: Usugrow & Chaz…
Osakans got an amazing show of collaborative live painting by two masters of the black line when CHAZ BOJORQUEZ teamed up with USUGROW at Chaz’ solo art showâ€â€sponsored by THREE TIDES TATTOO and KAZE magazineâ€â€at GALLERY 1F last weekend. For those still scratching their heads, Chaz Bojorquez is the originator of modern EastLos graphic art & letterform who’s gone on to achieve critical acclaim in the world of advertising and fine art, while Usugrow is a Tokyo-based illustrator and fine artist whose fluid linestyle is heavily influenced by the work Bojorquez and Pushead. Separated by a generation, the pair represents a lineage of style that has evolved across cultures and geographical borders with shockingly similar results. Both share an affinity for rendering skulls (Bojorquez’ “Señor Suerte” character is the basis of the modern Cholo calavera), and gorgeous, fluid lettering. When the pair teamed up to paint a gigantic panel before hundreds of awestruck onlookers, their shared lineage was obvious to all. Our good friends at THREE TIDES TATTOO and PSYCHO WHEELS were on hand to snap the action. HAVE A LOOK:
